Music Voice Control - Where Am I Heading With This Project?

Firstly, I would like to thank everyone for their support and excitement over this project. What started off as a proof of concept has turned into my main project and will be the only thing I'll be working on this month ( yup, including over Christmas - developing isn't seasonal :D ).

Quick reminder - My Twitter (@keyboardP) and YouTube channel.

So, y'know, where's my tutorial?

The reception has been incredible and there's no doubt a tutorial is in demand. I have been contacted by Microsoft's Brandon Watson regarding the project and the tutorial. We will be discussing the best way to go about doing this. I'll be making any announcements on this blog and my Twitter account.

Have you heard about the Marketplace? Huh?!

I know everyone wants to get their hands on this. I do plan on releasing this to the Marketplace for public use. It will work on any Windows Phone device running Mango. The video released is a proof of concept, not a final version. Therefore, there are inefficiences in the code and improvements to be made. Also, this isn't even the top-and-bottom of the app; it's just one aspect. Selecting and playing music isn't the entire experience of listening to music and I want to implement the features to make this app complete. Ultimately, this will result in a better, and more complete, experience for my users and that's what I care about. I try and be original and creative in my apps, and this app is going to be full of that.

What about copy-cat apps? They might be in the Marketplace before you!

No doubt there are programmers around trying to mimic this project, but I knew this may be the case. However, I'm confident in my app - so much so, that the copy-cat apps don't particularly bother me. I'm sure they'll sell, but ultimately, I'd rather have a small set of users having an amazing experience than a large set of users having a mediocre one. That's not to say I'm going to sit back and take my time - far from it - but I'm not going to let other developers rush me into releasing an incomplete app. I will be announcing my app's release and title on this blog and on my Twitter feed. If you see any apps that claim to do the same thing, they are not mine.

Can I beta test for you?

Due to the nature of the app, it's very difficult for me to see how it would work in other places around the world. Beta testing is something I'm seriously considering and will be making an announcement and sending invitations later on in the development process.

So what are the new features?

As the development process continues, I will release information on what users can expect. I don't make promises I can't keep and feel it would be better to not just release information, but to show the features working in a video. Like for all the other information, you can follow this blog and my Twitter for updates, but you can also subscribe to my YouTube channel as that's where I'll be hosting the videos.

Kinect. I heard something about Kinect...

This was a proof of concept and Kinect was (and still is) going to be a part of it. However, this reaction has taken me by surprise and the feedback has been immense. As a result, Kinect integration may come as an update because I don't want to hold the development back for the main app just for the Kinect side of things. There are also certain licensing rules regarding Kinect and commercial use, but things are rumoured to change in 2012 regarding this.

Is the app going to be free?

As much as I'd love to make it free (and I may do so), I need to eat :) Creating apps is my livelihood, so I hope you can appreciate that I need to be able to earn a little. I'm toying around with various suggestions on the best way to do this (charge for the app, donations, Kickstarter etc..). But, I do have an idea which makes the app free and helps put some food on the table. So, basically, it's unknown yet :)

Is it really called PhoneZune?

No. For reasons such as trademark infringment, 'PhoneZune' is a working title and probably will not be the final name. I haven't come up with a title yet, so feel free to suggest one. For now, however, I'll be using #phonezune on Twitter until I get the final name. So any discussions regarding this project can be tagged with that and I'll be watching the hashtag.

I'm going to be working on this throughout December and will try and keep you updated as often as possible. I hope I've answered any questions you have. I've tried replying to all the comments I've seen on various blogs but if I've missed any (non-technical) questions, feel free to ask away. Thank you all again for the great support and enthusiasm you've shown for this project. I'm just excited that this was only the beginning of it... :D
